Still experimenting after 25 years.

After 25 years behind a camera, I know how to make the photograph I need to make… But what keeps me anchored to the business of photography is figuring out what else a photograph can become when creativity is unrestrained.

Some experiments involve dogs. Some involve movie posters. Some involve AI and animals that don’t exist. None of them are client services. They’re what happens when curiosity gets a little time to itself.

The Movie Spoofs

Before generative AI, there was Photoshop.

These movie-poster spoofs began with real photographs and ended somewhere considerably less real. I photographed the subject (or used stock photos for specific breeds), then built and composited the environments around them.

I’ve had a love affair with generative AI since 2023.

I know the conversation around it is complicated. Copyright, authorship, training data, authenticity and the impact on working creatives are real issues, and I don’t think enthusiasm for the technology means ignoring them.

But as a place to experiment? I love it. After 25 years of working with cameras, lighting and Photoshop, generative AI gave me an entirely new kind of playground… one where mantises can borrow from sea creatures, insects can become botanicals, and biology is limited mostly by imagination.

For me, that’s the fun of it: making things that couldn’t exist any other way.

SILK ROAD NOMADS

In a not too distant future, the only place left on Planet Earth with any amount of measurable water is – paradoxically – the Sahara Desert. It supports a thriving civilization of nomads who often travel the Silk Road from North to South. Technology advances are born of necessity and not to entertain the masses.

Rain Capture is becoming the Number One industry. Trade is king. Cash is obsolete.

Rain comes in short heavy bursts but is frequent. Plant life is slowly evolving to deal with both deluge and drought. Many 22nd century World cultures have influenced the inhabitants.

THE ROAD TO SVALBARDI

On the Road to Svalbardi: The new old influencers gather a ragtag documentary crew to find the last seed vault.

EASTER ISLE OF DOGS

In an undisclosed location there exists an island whose sole purpose is to stand as a tribute to Dog. The statues all look toward the sea as if waiting for someone to return. No one knows how they came to be. No humans are allowed.

It is the most peaceful place on Earth. It is known as The Easter Isle of Dogs.
