We collaborated with an accounting firm that was contemplating upgrading their website. They needed photography, copy and web design. Photos needed to be completed in a way that we could mix and match people for ongoing group shots. Read More

Answer: What is copy-editing.

Someone asked me recently, “What’s the difference between proofreading and copy-editing?” The answer is seldom a clear-cut issue because, most of the time, if I am proofreading, I am editing. However, proofreading is generally reading for typos, omissions and formatting; copy-editing is more complex and involves correcting grammatical errors as well as rewriting for better clarity (among other things). The following image illustrates a recent edit of web-page copy (and this comes from someone who thought their copy was fine). The copy on the left is the original; the copy on the right is full of red ink, meaning it needed some major modification. Read More

The Law of Balance

This project was a lot of fun — Not your typical workout brochure. I needed to come up with copy for everything from business cards and magnets, to bios and newsletters. And I did the photography too (www.sgodphoto.com). Graphic Design: Shine Inc. Here are a few samples: We persuaded the client to add an advice column from a cow … . Yes, a cow. We called it, “Cow Wisdom.” Here is the original copy for your enjoyment: “Balance is a law of nature: Cows understand this. Even though they tend to snooze on four legs, they don’t actually sleep on four legs. The practice of tipping cows (or rather sneaking up on a snoozer) only works if you catch them by surprise. A fully conscious cow, on the other hand, seeks balance and will either move away from the offending individual (aerobic action) or constantly adjust their balance when pushed (anaerobic action). This use of resistance to external stimuli saves them from harm. At BodyArchitecture, our individual resistance programs will help you regain balance in your lives so that life does not push you around: You will tip cows should you feel the need (keeping in mind it is a felony in […] Read More

Copywriting and Horses

For my first post, I really wanted to write something clever, something great, something awe-inspiring … . But that’s the problem with most beginnings: They never get out of the gate. There’s way too much pressure to be sensational. Take jockeys for example. They might be focused on the race ahead, the turn of the track and the finish line, but the horse just wants to run. So, while I am fully aware that I need to be the jockey, I am excellent at being the horse — and getting out of the gate. Please enjoy my musings, both personal and business related, and if you find yourself in need of a copywriter, give me a call. I promise I’ll get back to you after a nice bucket of oats. Read More

About Susan Goddard

Officially, Susan Goddard Photography creates dryer-fresh advertising, corporate and editorial imagery for advertising agencies, design firms, magazines, and corporations, both public and private.

Unofficially, I've lived in the USA for 30+ years after narrowly escaping a rainy future in England. I can discuss American politics but not English ones, unless you count the politics of the school playground. I love chess. I've won one lottery (although there was no cash involved, just an elusive Green Card). I play six-degrees-of-separation for fun and find that in Denver, it's usually only two or three degrees (even if it's the President or a Hollywood movie star and sometimes it's one and the same). I have seen one low-flying, UFO in broad daylight. I am completely in love with my dog, Bodhi, who lives up to his name in every way (a being of wisdom and enlightenment). I am bummed (how's that for eloquence) that neither DaVinci or Einstein are still anchored to Terra Firma because I'd love to meet them, sit around a fountain somewhere (hopefully with an Americano in hand) and ask them what their take is on "Life, The Universe and Everything"... (Thank you Douglas Adams.) I love "Game of Thrones", "Homeland" and all things "Shameless". And I love being in the business of photography.
